What is considered bullying?
Bullying is any unwanted action, comment, or behavior that is aggressive towards another person. Bullying involves a power imbalance as well which generally comes as a physical difference in size or strength. In order for an action or behavior to be considered bullying it must happen over and over again.
Types of Bullying
There are four main types of bullying:
1. Verbal Bullying -Teasing -Threatening -Name calling -Inappropriate comments 2. Social Bullying -Humiliating others -Leaving others out purposefully -Spreading rumors 3. Physical Bullying -Spitting -Hitting/punching/kicking/pushing/tripping -Taking and or breaking others' property 4. Cyber Bulling -Any form of bullying (usually verbal) using social media, texting, internet, etc. |
Statistics
- Approximately 1 in every 3 children are victims of bullying each school year.
- 19.6% of high school students in the US report being bullied at school in the past year. 14.8% reported being bullied online (StopBullying.gov, n.d.).
- Schools who used prevention programs were able to decrease bullying by up to 25% (StopBullying.gov, n.d.).
-Majority of students who are victims of bullying are bullied for physical characteristics, race, ethnicity, disability, or sexual orientation
